The Hold Steady unexpectedly claimed the top spot as my favorite concert of August. I caught them during a three night run at the intimate Bluebird Theater (550 capacity), and oh-man, do they put on a show!
They may be the ultimate dad rock band. Past Prime describes The Hold Steady as “a pastiche of arena rock gusto and punk rock mayhem, with a poet’s wit on top. Those big guitar leads. The silly solos. And the glorious ones.”
For the unfamiliar, start with their seminal album, Boys & Girls in America, chock full of literary references, 70’s era stadium guitar riffs and, not surprisingly, lyrics about boys and girls in America. Pitchfork rated the album a 9.4 out of 10.
